Driving Traffic through Tags

Monday, July 17, 2006

As a key element of online marketing, we have to consider how people choose to access information via the net. For many, it is just via search. Others prefer to use t the Yahoo directory or maybe a niche directory related to their business. Increasingly, we are seeing tagging as a means by which people will find information that they need. So people will surf clouds of tags, say, on business networking. If people choose to use a method, then serve up your valuable information how they want to find it.

You make a good point here about framing information in a way that we know people like it. Im just wondering how many people use tagging?

Social bookmarking is on the increase so its important for us all to get the foundations right. Its certainly an area to watch.

You'll have to go a long way to convince me that tagging will yeild any real benefits. I just can't see the benefit and nor can a lot of people within the SEO community. The way I see it when you implement tags your boosting Technorati ranking within search engines and potentially damaging your own PR. I imagine it's also a very very small section of internet users that are even aware of the likes of technorati and tags.

I can see a day when tags have become so misused that Google regards them as keyword spam and don't get me started on tag clouds. If you think that's a useful way of finding information then I can only imagine you've never used one.
