Thursday, March 31, 2005

Here's something all you bloggers might be interested in. If you're nosey like me and you like having a read of other peoples blogs then technorati is right up your street. It's basically a search engine for blogs.

Technorati is a real-time search engine that keeps track of what is going on in the blogosphere — the world of weblogs.

Internet Services Blog

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Did a search of Google today for Internet Services Blog and 2 results in the top 5 were quite interesting.

  1. http://developer.yahoo.net/blog/ - It's a blog for people that use the Yahoo search developer network. (People that create applications using the Yahoo search engine)
  2. http://aws.typepad.com/ - Similar to the Yahoo developers blog but for people that use the Amazon system.
There's not much there unless you're involved but I did find this on the Amazon Blog.
http://amaztype.tha.jp/

The Amaztype application uses Amazon cover art to create a visual representation of any word, using titles which match that word. Very cool, requires Flash. Click on the background to zoom in, and hover the cursor over any cover to view more details.

Obviously I've tried all the rude words I can think of.

RSS Feeds R Us

Tuesday, March 29, 2005

I spent a couple of hours getting my head around RSS feeds yesterday and found that they weren't the 5 headed beast I thought they might be. In fact a quick search of google and I found a simple RSS to html php script that made it all very easy.

I used the script to test displaying 3 RSS feeds on a web page.

The only issue I found was with the RSS feed from my own blog. Although in the settings section of Blogger you can choose between "Full" and "Short" for the descriptions of each article in the RSS feed, I found this to not make any difference. I'll investigate further when I have time and let you know my findings.

Anyway the idea is that this week we'll use the same method to pump fresh relevant content into the web site design section of our site and our Free ISP.

New ISP

We're launching a new ISP called UK Internet Access. It's the fourth in our ISP portfolio and it's our first 0844 dial up ISP. I'll blog some more about 0844 at a later date.

Our target market for UK Internet Access is Johnny Brit. Despite our other ISPs having names like, Free UK ISP and 1 2 Free UK ISP we still get a large amount of non-UK residents registering to use the service. With that in mind we've branded the UK Internet Access ISP in a rather jingoistic manner which will hopefully deter Fritz.

........and they're off!

No sooner has the blog promotion finished and the people they come. Well it's only 2 people but it's a start.

Blog Promotion

Build it and they will come.......

Of course that's not strictly true, particularly when it comes to web site builds. You can spend hours creating a wonderfully usable and beautiful web site that is jam packed with great content, but what's the point if nobody knows that it is there? The same is true of blogs of course and today I spent a couple of hours submitting to blog directories in a bid to drive some traffic this way.

First off I went back and repeated the initial ground I'd covered whilst promoting my previous blog. Thankfully I'd blogged exactly what I did in my, "Driving traffic to a blog" entry. I've also followed the excellent basics covered by blogger on blog promotion.

Secondly I've submitted to all the working directories suggested on the blogsubmission.com website.

Finally I've added stat tracking to the blog using the excellent and Free StatCounter. After all there's little point having traffic if you can't see where it's coming from and how much there is.

So that explains all the pretty little graphic links on the right hand side of the blog. They all require/prefer a link back to their sites which is fair enough as they're all free ways of promoting your own blog/site.

A New Start

Monday, March 14, 2005

I'm starting again with a fresh Blog and leaving my old blog http://tinternet-stuff.blogspot.com/ behind.

Why?
Well quite simply because the Blog was an exercise in driving traffic to other sites by having a relevent Blog. When I created the first Blog I made a glaring error by chosing "tinternet" as a host. After tracking traffic to my Blog I soon realised that I was only gaining traffic from Google from people that were searching for "tinternet" which had little value. I need traffic from people with ISP related search terms, hence the new isp-uk.blogspot.com URL

Lets see how this one goes.
